This is Part II of 'How The Troubles Began,' an exclusive series for show supporters. In the first episode of this six-part series, we explored the violent origins of the State of Northern Ireland and the discrimination faced by the Nationalist minority.

This podcast explores the late 1950s and 1960s, a time of change across the world. While the IRA mounted a largely ineffective campaign in the late 50s, the 1960s witnessed the emergence of the Civil Rights Movement. Inspired by the Civil Rights Movement in the US, it demanded equality for nationalists.

However, even these modest demands provoked a violent backlash setting the stage for major conflict.
