The Wicklow Military Road Podcast Series

In April and May 2025, the Irish History Podcast, in collaboration with Wicklow County Council and the Heritage Council, invites you to embark on an extraordinary journey along the Wicklow Military Road. This immersive four-part series explores the history of the Wicklow Mountains through this iconic road, which has stood as a silent witness to centuries of history and transformation.

What is the Wicklow Military Road?

Originally constructed in the early 19th century to provide the British military with access to the rugged uplands, the Wicklow Military Road is more than a route through what was once considered 'bandit country.' It is a gateway to understanding the complex tapestry of history that has unfolded in this remarkable region. As you travel along this iconic pathway, you will uncover stories of rebellion and resilience, of communities once isolated by the very landscapes that now connect them.

What can you expect?

Recorded on location amidst the breathtaking scenery, each episode of the podcast features engaging conversations with local residents, historians, and experts. These include historian Frank Treacy, who shares the story of a unique military cemetery hidden in the mountains. Prof. Graeme Warren offers insights into the early human history of the region, while Robbie Carter recounts his experiences working deep underground in the lead mines at Glendasan. Carmel O'Toole, a historian and resident of Glenmalure, provides a personal perspective on the area's rich cultural heritage.
